The History of Mother’s Day
The original Mother’s Day was a tradition in England, where servants would be given the day off from work on the fourth Sunday in lent to visit their mothers and spend time with them, bringing them gifts. Flowers were the most popular present to give to mothers on this special day as early as the 1600s.
Mother’s Day became a holiday in America when Anna Jarvis, who came from Grafton, West Virginia, continued her own mother’s dream of creating a celebration honoring all mothers. The holiday as we know it, on the second Sunday in May, was instated by Woodrow Wilson after Anna Jarvis’ campaign promoting it. The first official Mother’s Day was in 1914. It has grown to be one of the biggest holidays in the year for the giving of flowers, with many florists offering beautiful, special bouquets especially for the event.
